Myofunctional Therapy

What Is Myofunctional Therapy for Kids?

Myofunctional therapy—often called “Myo”—focuses on helping children develop healthy oral muscle patterns for breathing, swallowing, eating, and speaking. These muscles include the tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw, all of which play a key role in how your child talks, chews, swallows, and even sleeps.

When these muscles aren’t working together properly, children may experience challenges such as:

  • Mouth breathing or resting open-mouth posture
  • Tongue thrust or difficulty keeping the tongue in the right resting position
  • Speech sound errors or unclear articulation
  • Messy eating or incorrect swallowing patterns
  • Thumb sucking, pacifier use, or other oral habits
  • Sleep disturbances related to poor oral muscle tone

Myofunctional therapy helps strengthen and retrain these muscles through fun, targeted exercises—promoting proper oral function, clearer speech, and overall healthier development.

How Can Kim Help?

Kim, our skilled Speech-Language Pathologist, is trained in pediatric myofunctional therapy and has a warm, engaging approach that makes sessions motivating for kids.

She begins with a thorough evaluation to understand your child’s specific needs, then creates a customized treatment plan focused on:

  • Building awareness and strength in oral muscles
  • Encouraging nasal breathing and correct tongue placement
  • Supporting speech clarity and confidence
  • Replacing oral habits with healthier patterns
  • Collaborating with parents and other professionals (such as orthodontists or ENTs) for comprehensive care

With Kim’s guidance, children gain the skills and confidence they need for improved speech, feeding, and overall oral health—setting the foundation for lifelong success.
